Whilst undertaking enriching activities for participants, Base Camp aims to maintain a sustainable existence at Baldersby Park — helping to manage the woodland so it continues to thrive, and modelling a reduce, reuse and recycle approach in all the activities we plan.
Site and woodland management
Where possible, we want to limit the impact we have on, and leave on, the land.
- Leave No Trace — we are committed to leaving the site each time as we found it. We remove any litter and dismantle structures built (e.g. dens) to allow the ground to recover.
- Foraging for food or craft — wherever possible, we will only use what is on the woodland floor for crafts. Should fresh plants be required (e.g. foraging for food), we will instil a 'take only what you need' approach to ensure habitats aren't disturbed and food chains aren't disrupted.
- Biodiversity enhancement — as part of our planning, we will actively choose to improve the site for biodiversity, such as planting wildflowers and trees, and creating habitats.
- Rotate session sites — to avoid compaction or damage to bluebell sites, we will visit different areas of the park for our activities and play.
Operational sustainability
Wherever possible, we will reduce, reuse and recycle.
- Avoid single-use plastics.
- Compost toileting, using sawdust from local woodworkers.
- When needing to buy resources or tools, we are committed to buying second-hand, local or ethical products where possible.
- Using wood and kindling collected from our woodland for campfires.
Encouraging stewardship
By following this policy, we hope to promote positive practices that will be passed on to our visitors, encouraging them to have a loving and caring approach to nature.
